Israel, Netherlands clash with plenty still to play for (Tue., 7 p.m. ET, Fox Sports App)

12:40 AM UTC

MIAMI -- Although neither the Netherlands nor Israel can still advance to the next round of the World Baseball Classic, try telling either team that its 2026 finale Tuesday night doesn’t mean anything.

“We're going to prepare ourselves for the next game,” Netherlands manager Andruw Jones said after Sunday’s loss to the Dominican Republic. “We have to learn what we did wrong in order to learn for the next time.”

Israel also fell victim to the D.R.’s potent offense, and with their fate essentially decided as they faced a massive deficit in the late innings, manager Brad Ausmus took the opportunity to sub in some of his players that hadn’t touched the field to that point.

Expect more of that Tuesday night.

“Great experience for a lot of guys who have never experienced something like this,” Ausmus said. “We got some guys in at the end of the game who have never experienced it, so hopefully they have lasting memories from it. That can be a silver lining.”

Ausmus said he hopes baseball in Israel -- which can’t finish last in the pool and thus won’t have to play in the qualifier for the next Classic -- continues to blossom thanks to his team’s participation in the tournament.

“The hope is as Israel plays in the WBC, more and more players that are eligible to play for them get involved,” Ausmus said. “That has happened, especially over the last couple years, and farther down the road, you actually hope it's Israeli-born players rather than American players with Jewish heritage.”
