A's add five players to 40-man roster

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s selected infielder Nick Allen and outfielder Cody Thomas from Triple-A Las Vegas, infielder Jonah Bride from Double-A Midland and right-handed pitcher Jorge Juan and infielder Jordan Diaz from High-A Lansing, the club announced today.

Allen combined to hit .288 with six home runs, 41 RBI and 12 stolen bases in 89 games with Midland and Las Vegas. He also played for the United States in the Olympics where he was named to the All-Olympic Team and earned Best Defensive Player honors. The 23-year-old right-handed hitter went 6-for-21 (.286) with two doubles, a home run and two RBI to help Team USA to the Silver Medal. Allen was originally selected by the A’s in the 3rd round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft and is a .267 hitter with 10 home runs and 114 RBI in 317 games in four seasons in the minors. He is rated as the A’s third best prospect by MLB.com.

Bride batted .265 with nine home runs and 49 RBI in 78 games with Midland. He led the Double-A Central with a .407 on-base percentage and also ranked fifth in walks (57) and 10th in OPS (.831). The 25-year old right-handed hitter also hit .240 with a .441 on-base percentage in 16 games with Mesa in the Arizona Fall League following the season. Bride was the A’s 23rd round selection in the 2018 First-Year Player Draft and has a .274 batting average and .381 on-base percentage in 251 games in three seasons in the A’s farm system.

Diaz spent the entire 2021 season at Lansing where he hit .288 with 24 doubles, one triple, 13 home runs and 56 RBI in 90 games. He ranked fourth in the High-A Central in batting average and slugging percentage (.483), tied for seventh in doubles, eighth in OPS (.820), tied for ninth in extra base hits (38) and 10th in hits (96) and total bases (161). The 21-year-old right-handed hitting native of Colombia was originally signed by the A’s on Aug. 13, 2016 and is a .271 career hitter with 23 home runs and 148 RBI in 258 games in four seasons in the minors. Diaz is rated as the A’s number 11 prospect by MLB.com.

Juan began the season in extended Spring Training before joining Low-A Stockton on June 19. He was transferred to Lansing on Aug. 3 and combined with both clubs for a 1-3 record and a 5.40 ERA in eight games, including six starts. The 22-year-old right-hander struck out 40 batters in 26.2 innings and walked 13 while holding the opposition to a .222 batting average. Juan was signed out of the Dominican Republic on July 17, 2017 and is 2-13 with a 4.88 ERA in 36 games, 18 starts, in three professional seasons. In 103.1 career innings, he has 124 strikeouts and 68 walks. He was rated as the A’s 21st best prospect by MLB.com.

Thomas was batting .289 with 18 home runs and 52 RBI in 59 games with Las Vegas before missing the final month of the season with a strained right achilles. At the time of the injury, he was tied for second in the Triple-A West in extra base hits (42), tied for seventh in home runs and ranked ninth in doubles (20). The 27-year old left-handed hitter was acquired by the A’s on Feb. 12, 2021 with Adam Kolarek for Sheldon Neuse and Gus Varland and is a .259 career hitter with 99 home runs and 330 RBI in 496 games over five seasons in the minors. Thomas was rated as the A’s 19th best prospect by MLB.com.
