Shaw day to day after HBP forces early exit
ANAHEIM -- Brewers third baseman Travis Shaw, stuck in a hitting slump, was struck on the right hand Wednesday by a pitch from Angels right-hander Felix Pena in the second inning of a 4-2 loss in the series finale at Angel Stadium. Shaw left the game after a brief attempt to stay in.
The Brewers announced Shaw suffered a bruised hand and is day to day. X-rays were negative.
"Just day to day,” said manager Craig Counsell. “He’s a little sore right now.”
Hernan Perez replaced Shaw as a pinch-runner during Mike Moustakas' at-bat a few pitches after Shaw was hit. Shaw was also hit by a pitch in the same area during the Brewers’ opening series against the Cardinals at Miller Park.
“We’ll see how it feels on Friday,” said Shaw, referring to the start of a National League Championship Series rematch against the Dodgers. “It’s pretty stiff, pretty sore right now. That’s twice already this year. This one got me a little more flush than the other one did. It’s pretty big right now. We’ll see how it responds over the next two days.”
The plunking continued a tough stretch for Shaw, who has one hit in his last 21 at-bats and was hitless in his last 10 at-bats with eight strikeouts. He struck out four times on Monday against the Angels and smashed his bat to pieces against a railing in the dugout.
