Cubs activate INF Darwin Barney from paternity list, recall LHP Zac Rosscup from Triple-A Iowa

CHICAGO - The Chicago Cubs today activated infielder Darwin Barney from the paternity leave list and recalled left-handed pitcher Zac Rosscup from Triple-A Iowa. In corresponding roster moves, right-handed pitchers Kyle Hendricks and Blake Parker have been optioned to Iowa.

Barney, 28, is hitting .387 (12-for-31) with two doubles, one triple and one RBI in eight July contests. Placed on the paternity leave list, July 9, Barney is batting .224 (44-for-196) with 10 doubles, one triple, two home runs and 16 RBI in 70 games for the Cubs this season. He has made 65 starts at second base, and compiled a .986 fielding percentage (3 E/218 TC).

Originally selected by the Cubs in the fourth round of the 2007 Draft out of Oregon State University, Barney's .990 fielding percentage (21 E/2,171 TC) at second base since 2011 - his first full major league season - ranks fourth among N.L. second basemen. Barney is batting .244 (452-for-1,853) with 88 doubles, 12 triples, 18 home runs and 146 RBI in 540 games for Chicago since making his debut in 2010.

Rosscup, 26, begins his fourth stint with the Cubs this season as he has made four scoreless appearances, totaling 4.0 innings. He was the team's 26th man for Chicago's April 16 doubleheader at the Yankees, and was also up with the big league club, April 24-May 2. He was recalled again, May 7, but landed on the 15-day disabled list, May 14 (retroactive to May 10) with left shoulder soreness. Rosscup was activated from the D.L. and optioned to Iowa, June 14, where he is 2-0 with a 2.61 ERA (6 ER/20.2 IP) in 20 games this season.

Since making his big league debut with Chicago last September, Rosscup has no record and a 0.84 ERA (1 ER/10.2 IP) in 14 career relief appearances, walking nine and striking out 12. He owns a 16-10 record with a 2.62 ERA (69 ER/237.1 IP) in 114 career minor league games (27 starts), walking 87 and striking out 273 since he was selected by Tampa Bay in the 28th round of the 2009 Draft. The Clackamas, Ore., native was acquired by the Cubs as part of the eight-player trade that brought Matt Garza to Chicago on January 8, 2011.   

Hendricks, 24, yesterday made his big league debut, allowing 4.0 runs in six innings in Chicago's 6-4, 12-inning win at Cincinnati. A 2014 Pacific Coast League All-Star, Hendricks is 10-5 with a 3.59 ERA (41 ER/102.2 IP) in 17 starts for Iowa.

Parker, 29, has spent most of the year with Iowa, recording 18 saves and a 1.44 ERA (4 ER/25.0 IP) in 25 relief appearances en route to 2014 Pacific Coast League All-Star honors. He is 1-0 with a 9.53 ERA (6 ER/5.2 IP) in five games for the Cubs this season.
