D-backs release Bumgarner after he goes unclaimed

April 26th, 2023

PHOENIX -- The D-backs officially released left-hander on Wednesday. The veteran starting pitcher was designated for assignment last week and went through waivers unclaimed.

Bumgarner was signed to a five-year, $85 million free agent deal prior to the 2020 season, and he finished his tenure in Arizona with a 15-32 mark and a 5.23 ERA in 69 starts.

The D-backs will be responsible for paying the nearly $34 million left on Bumgarner’s contract. If he were to hook up with another team, that team would be responsible only for paying him the Major League minimum.

“Just not very good,” Bumgarner said after his final start for the D-backs on April 19. “Haven't been very good. It's frustrating. I obviously am trying to do better, putting in the work. It just hasn't shown up yet.”

Bumgarner, 33, spent his first 11 MLB seasons with the Giants and was an All-Star four times. Owner of a 134-124 career record with a 3.47 ERA, he’s noted for his postseason success. Bumgarner, a member of three Giants World Series championship teams, is 4-0 with a 0.25 ERA in five World Series games. He was named MVP of the 2014 World Series and NLCS.
