Marlins recall Below for second go-around

Left-hander has gone 5-3 with 2.39 ERA in 11 Triple-A starts

MIAMI -- The Marlins recalled left-hander Duane Below from Triple-A New Orleans after optioning Chris Hatcher to the Zephyrs following Monday night's game.

Below is 5-3 with a 2.39 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP in 11 starts with the Zephyrs.

Miami manager Mike Redmond said the club optioned Hatcher to add a fresh arm to the bullpen after using every reliever except for A.J. Ramos in Monday's 14-inning loss to Atlanta.

Below will be available out of the bullpen on Tuesday night against the Braves.

"If they need me, I'm ready to go," Below said. "I can hopefully go in and eat up as many innings as I can, and continue to throw strikes and get outs."

Below is back in the Majors for the second time this season, having previously been promoted on May 18 when Miami designated reliever Jon Rauch for assignment.

The southpaw pitched 2 2/3 innings in two appearances during his first stint with the Marlins, giving up three runs on six hits, walking two and striking out two.

Below took the loss when the Phillies beat the Marlins, 7-3, on May 21, giving up three runs on four hits in his Miami debut. He showed improvement in his next appearance, throwing 1 2/3 scoreless innings in a 10-6 loss to the Rays on May 26.

Below was optioned back to New Orleans on May 31 when the Marlins recalled Jacob Turner, who now leads Miami starters with a 2.30 ERA.

"You continue to try to improve each day in order to get back to this level," Below said. "Now that I'm back, it's the same thing. Try to continue to improve and get better and stay here this time."
