Trio of prospects added to Futures rosters

With the Futures Game less than two weeks away, Major League Baseball announced Tuesday the addition of three players to the rosters. D-backs shortstop Chris Owings will join the U.S. team, while Padres outfielder Reymond Fuentes and Mariners first baseman Ji-Man Choi were added to the World team.

Tuesday's moves were necessitated by a pair of injuries and a promotion. Owings takes the place of Mariners shortstop Brad Miller, who made his Major League debut Friday. Fuentes replaces Cubs outfielder Jorge Soler, who is on the disabled list with a stress fracture in his shin, and Choi will fill in for Rangers catcher Jorge Alfaro, who broke his hand when he was hit by a pitch Friday.

The 15th annual SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game takes place at 2 p.m. ET on All-Star Sunday, July 14, at Citi Field in New York and can be seen live on MLB.com, ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD and followed live on MLB.com's Gameday. In addition, XM Radio will broadcast play-by-play coverage of the event live on MLB Network Radio XM 89. MLB.com will also provide complete coverage before, during and after the game. Owings is ranked No. 99 on MLB.com's Top 100 prospect list. He is hitting .353 with seven home runs at Triple-A Reno this season. It was also announced Tuesday that Owings was elected to represent the Pacific Coast League in the Triple-A All-Star Game on July 17.

The addition of Owings gives the D-backs three players on the U.S. roster. Third baseman Matt Davidson, his teammate at Reno, and right-hander Archie Bradley were named to the team when the initial rosters were released last week.

Fuentes, who grew up in Puerto Rico, will be making his second appearance in the Futures Game. He also appeared in the 2011 event, going 0-for-2 in the World team's 6-4 loss. Fuentes is in the midst of his best season as a professional and will hope to improve on his previous Futures Game showing. He is hitting .332 with a .419 on-base percentage at Double-A San Antonio.

With Fuentes' inclusion, the Padres will also have three representatives at Citi Field. Fuentes joins fellow San Antonio outfielder Yeison Asencio on the World team, while catcher Austin Hedges is on the U.S. team.

When the rosters were announced last week, Choi was one of the five Futures Finalists vying for the final spot on the World team. He finished fourth in the fan vote, which was won by Astros shortstop Carlos Correa, but Choi is ultimately headed to the Futures Game anyway.

Choi, a South Korean native, began the year at Class A Advanced High Desert, where he hit .337 with seven home runs in 48 games. He was promoted in early June to Double-A Jackson, where he is hitting .221 with five home runs in 21 games.
