Reyes continues to impress with his long homers

Notes on Lauer, Kinsler, Myers, Machado, Hedges

June 5th, 2019

The easy power of Franmil Reyes continues to produce things I’ve never witnessed before at Petco Park.

On Tuesday night, Reyes launched 866 feet of home runs toward the batter’s eye in center. The two blasts hit the structure. One was measured at 428 feet, the second at 438. That is the first time I’ve seen two homers land in that area in a game -- much less from the same player.

Reyes also homered Monday night, meaning Tuesday marked the third time this season that he has homered in back-to-back games.

He has 19 homers in 58 games on the season, including four in the last four games and nine in his last 18, compared to a total of 16 in 87 games in 2018.

NOTEBOOK

• LHP Eric Lauer not only celebrated his 24th birthday Wednesday night with a third straight win -- he got his first hit of the season. Lauer allowed one run on two hits and three walks with three strikeouts over six innings in the Padres’ 8-2 win over the Phillies at Petco Park. Lauer is 3-0 over his last four starts with a 1.50 earned run average and a 0.833 WHIP over his last four starts -- allowing five runs (four earned) on 17 hits and three walks with 17 strikeouts in 24 innings pitched. During those four games, Lauer has given up one earned run in each game -- lowering his ERA to 4.18 from 5.75. He has also allowed only one home run over the past 24 innings after serving up seven in the first 40 2/3 innings this season. The Padres have won in each of Lauer’s last four starts and are 7-5 in the 12 games he has started this season. Lauer (5-4) got his first hit of the season -- and the third of his career – in the third inning off Phillies starter Aaron Nola. Lauer is the fourth starting pitcher in Padres history to get a hit on his birthday. He is the first Padres pitcher to earn a win on his birthday since Colin Rea on July 1, 2016.

• 2B Ian Kinsler went 2-for-4 with a double Tuesday to reach the .200 mark for the first time since April 1. On Monday, Kinsler drove in the 900th run of his career. Since May 16, Kinsler has gone 14-for-48 (.292) with four doubles, three home runs, seven RBIs, nine runs scored and five walks in 15 games for a .358 on-base percentage and a .563 slugging percentage for a .921 OPS.

• C Austin Hedges went 2-for-3 Tuesday. When Hedges drew a walk Monday, it snapped an 0-for-12 run that included nine strikeouts. He has reached base in four of his last six plate appearances.

• CF Wil Myers reached base in all four plate appearances Monday night, marking the third time he has done that this season. Myers was 2-for-2 with two walks Monday. He was also 2-for-2 with two walks and a home run on April 16 against Colorado. And he had two homers in two at-bats with three walks on May 25 at Toronto.

• SS Manny Machado’s grand slam to cap a seven-run sixth inning Monday night was his 10th homer of the season as well as the ninth grand slam of his career. Monday’s slam -- the third by a Padre this season -- also ended an 0-for-18 run for Machado that included eight strikeouts.
