Young will take the spot of Madison Bumgarner in the rotation. Bumgarner is on the IL with a mid-back strain and is expected to miss this start and possibly another. Young made 17 appearances (15 starts) during his rookie campaign last year.

Richards' slider is as sharp as it's ever been, and he's used the pitch to great success, inducing whiffs on 41.2 percent of swings. He faced the D-backs in his first start this season, tossing five scoreless, one-hit innings.

Ray is still looking to get on track this year. This will be his second start against the Padres. In his first outing against them, he allowed three runs over 3 2/3 innings at Petco Park on July 25 in his season debut.

In a sport with ever-rising fastball velocities, Davies gets by with a high-80s two-seamer at the knees and a changeup that darts below them. His command of both pitches has been excellent this season, and his changeup usage is up significantly.

Minor made two starts against the Padres in 2018, going 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA. Over his career, the left-hander is 2-3 with a 4.06 ERA in six starts and one relief appearance against them.
