DENVER – Marlins right-hander Janson Junk will make his next scheduled rehab start for Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday after X-rays came back negative on his left wrist, manager Clayton McCullough revealed on Monday afternoon.
Junk, who began a rehab assignment on Sunday as he works his way back from right shin bone inflammation, exited in the third inning after being struck by a 106 mph line drive.
Junk allowed three hits, including one homer, struck out three batters and didn't issue a walk. He threw 42 pitches (30 strikes) before the comebacker forced his early exit. The rehab start marked Junk’s first game action since being placed on the 15-day injured list on May 28.
"The shin area, ankle area held up well, and he'll make another rehab start for Jacksonville," McCullough said. "We would look to try to probably get 60-plus [pitches], somewhere in the 60s [since] he was in the low-40s when he had to come out of that last game. He avoided anything major with the line drive comebacker."
Before landing on the injured list, Junk held a 3-5 record, sporting a 4.80 ERA in 11 starts after earning the fifth spot in Miami’s Opening Day rotation over Braxton Garrett.
Since then, Ryan Gusto and Tyler Phillips have filled out the rotation behind Sandy Alcantara, Eury Pérez and Max Meyer after Chris Paddack was designated for assignment on May 5.
"Junk will come back in the rotation," McCullough said when asked about Junk’s role upon returning.
