Saturday's top prospect performers

April 14th, 2019

Here's a look at Saturday's top Minor League performers from each team's Top 30 Prospects list:

AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST

Blue Jays: Bo Bichette, SS (No. 2, MLB No. 11) -- 3-for-5, HR, 3 RBI (Triple-A Buffalo)
Bichette went just 2-for-20 over the first five games of the season, but appears to be adjusting to Triple-A. Since that season-opening skid Bichette has hits in four straight games. Both the homer (an opposite-field shot) and the multihit performance were Bichette's first this season.

Orioles: Rylan Bannon, 2B/3B (No. 23) -- 2-for-5, 1 2B, 1 HR (Double-A Bowie)
Bannon hit two homers in 32 Double-A games to end the 2018 season. This time around it only took him nine games to hit two homers. The 22-year-old is hitting .250 this year, but is 3-for-10 with two extra-base hits over his past two games.
Orioles prospects stats »

Rays: Brendan McKay, LHP/DH (No. 3, MLB No. 29) -- 2-for-4, RBI, R (Double-A Montgomery)
McKay has now hit safely in four of five games as the Biscuits' designated hitter, and Saturday's multihit performance was his second in three games. He has a .333 average overall (.818 OPS) and four RBIs in those contests. On the mound, the two-way standout racked up 11 strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings his first Double-A start on April 10.
Rays prospects stats »

Red Sox: Michael Chavis, 3B/1B (No. 1, No. 77 in MLB) -- 3-for-4, 1 2B, 1 HR (Triple-A Pawtucket)
Chavis began the day in an 0-for-19 skid over his past six games, but it didn't take long for him to get back on track. The 23-year-old went deep in the first inning, a solo shot, then proceeded to collect a couple more hits throughout the rest of the afternoon.
Red Sox prospects stats »

Yankees: Thairo Estrada, SS/2B (No. 19) -- 3-for-5, 2 HR, 3 RBI (Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre)

AMERICAN LEAGUE CENTRAL

Indians: Daniel Johnson, OF (No. 22) -- Game 1: 2-for-4, HR (2), 4 RBI; Game 2: 0-for-3, R, BB (Triple-A Columbus)
Johnson put the RubberDucks on the board in the third inning with a two-run homer and later added a two-run single to cap an eight-run sixth inning in Akron's 10-7 win over Altoona in the opener of a doubleheader. He reached via a walk and scored a run in the nightcap as Akron completed the sweep.

Royals: Daniel Tillo, LHP (No. 25) -- 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K; Seuly Matias, OF (No. 6) -- 2-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, 2 R (Class A Advanced Wilmington)
Tillo, 22, issued a one-out walk in the first before settling in to retire 14 straight through five innings. The first three batters reached against him in the sixth via an error, a walk and a catcher's interference, but the left-hander recorded a swinging strikeout, followed by a ground-ball double play to escape the bases-loaded jam. He allowed a leadoff hit in the next inning before completing seven scoreless frames for his second career shutout. Matias provided Tillo with some late run support, hitting his first home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the top of the seventh. He went deep 31 times in the Class A South Atlantic League last year at age 19.
Royals prospects stats »

Tigers: Jacob Robson, OF (No. 17) -- 1-for-5 HR (1), 3 RBI (Triple-A Toledo)
After striking out in three of his first four at-bats, Robson came through with his first homer of the season in extras, hitting a three-run shot in the top of the 10th to help lead Toledo past Norfolk, 9-5. The 24-year-old outfielder hit a career-high 11 homers a season ago, including four in 57 games with Toledo.
Tigers prospects stats »

Twins: Brent Rooker, 1B/OF (No. 6) -- 3-for-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB (Triple-A Rochester)
Rooker has been in a bit of an early season funk, but perhaps this three-hit game will get him going. The 24-year-old has hit three homers this year, but has also struck out 18 times through nine games.
Twins prospects stats »

White Sox: Luis Robert, OF (No. 4, MLB No. 38) -- 3-for-4, 2B, 3B (Class A Advanced Winston-Salem); Nick Madrigal, 2B (No. 5, MLB No. 45) -- 4-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI (Class A Advanced Winston-Salem)
Robert boosted his average to .475 and continued his ridiculously hot start to the season. The outfielder has multiple hits in eight of nine games he's played this season. Madrigal hasn't been as hot as Robert, but has still performed well and is hitting .310 early in the year. Madrigal has three multihit games and the four-hit effort marked the second of his career.

Murphy has six hits in his last two games after his two-hit performance in the Aviators' win against Fresno. He's hitting .407 through four games. The A's current tandem of Nick Hundley and Josh Phegley are hitting a combined .210 going into Sunday.
A's prospects stats »

Angels: Jordyn Adams, OF (No. 6) -- 2-for-4, RBI (Class A Burlington)
The 19-year-old is off to a slow start and hitting .188 through nine games. Adams was 0-for-12 over his past three games before putting together his first multihit performance of the season.
Angels prospects stats »

Astros: Yordan Alvarez, OF/1B (No. 3, MLB No. 42) -- 1-for-4, solo HR (6), BB (Triple-A Round Rock)
Alvarez, 21, is tied for the Minor League home run lead with six after hitting a tape-measure solo shot in Round Rock's 9-4 loss to Memphis. He's more than a quarter of the way toward reaching his career-high of 20, which he posted last season over 88 games split between the Express and Double-A Corpus Christi.
Astros prospects stats »

Mariners: Jarred Kelenic, OF (No. 2, No. 54 in MLB) -- 2-for-3 (Class A West Virginia)
A night after hitting his first homer as a member of the Mariners' organization, Kelenic kept up with the momentum and collected a pair of hits. The 19-year-old got off to a slow start, but is 6-for-12 over the past three games.
Mariners prospects stats »

Rangers: Anderson Tejeda, SS/2B (No. 4) -- 3-for-3, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, 2 SB (5) (Class A Advanced Down East)

NATIONAL LEAGUE EAST

Braves: Jacob Webb, RHP (No. 26) -- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (Triple-A Gwinnett)
Webb struck out a pair during a scoreless eighth inning in Gwinnett's 3-2 loss against Louisville. The 25-year-old righty has been sharp early this season, allowing one run on two hits while striking out five in four innings.
Braves prospects stats »

Marlins: Jordan Holloway, RHP (No. 13) -- 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K (Class A Advanced Jupiter)
The 22-year-old right-hander was lights-out in his second start, tossing six dominant frames in a 7-2 win over Lakeland. Holloway allowed a leadoff single to open the game, but retired the next seven he faced before issuing a two-out walk in the third inning. He sat down 10 straight after that, ultimately throwing 44 of his 75 pitches for strikes in the outing. The Marlins added Holloway, who features a plus fastball-curveball combo, to their 40-man roster last November even though he lost part of 2017 and much of '18 to Tommy John surgery.
Marlins prospects stats »

Mets: Ryley Gilliam, RHP (No. 21) -- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K (Class A Advanced St. Lucie)
The 2018 fifth-rounder might be long for the Florida State League after posting his fourth straight scoreless outing in St. Lucie's 11-1 rout of Florida. Gilliam hasn't allowed a hit in his last three appearances after yielding a pair of hits over two scoreless innings in his season debut. Altogether, the 22-year-old righty has fanned 11 in seven innings, during which he owns a 0.29 WHIP.
Mets prospects stats »

Phillies: Kyle Young, LHP (No. 17) -- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 10 K (Class A Advanced Clearwater)
The 6-foot-10 southpaw fell one strikeout short of matching his career-high but still took the loss as the Threshers fell to Fort Myers, 3-0. He struck out multiple batters in four separate frames and struck out the side in the sixth, albeit while pitching around a Royce Lewis RBI double.
Phillies prospects stats »

Nationals: Tres Barrera, C (No. 21) -- 2-for-4, R, HBP (Double-A Harrisburg)
The multihit performance was the 24-year-old backstop's fourth during his season-opening seven-game hitting streak for Harrisburg. He's hitting .538 (14-for-26) overall, with two homers, two doubles and seven RBIs. Behind the plate, Barrera, an above-average defensive catcher, has thrown out 4-for-7 attempted basestealers.

NATIONAL LEAGUE CENTRAL

Brewers: Keston Hiura, 2B (No. 1, MLB No. 20) -- 2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI (Triple-A San Antonio)
Hiura's two-run double in bottom of the seventh proved the difference in San Antonio's 5-3 win over Nashville. The 22-year-old second baseman is off to a hot start in Triple-A, hitting .297/.316/.649 with three homers and four doubles -- 16 strikeouts and one walk, too -- through his first 10 games.
Brewers prospects stats »

Cubs: Riley Thompson, RHP (No. 27) -- 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K (Class A South Bend)
Thompson faced three over the minimum over the first five innings as he and the Cubs' bullpen combined to throw a five-hit shutout against Lansing. In the process the 2018 11th-round pick earned his first pro win.
Cubs prospects stats »

Cardinals: Tommy Edman, INF (No. 11) -- 3-for-5, 2B, 3 R, 2 SB (Triple-A Memphis)
Edman extended his hitting streak to five with his second consecutive three-hit performance. After a very impressive Spring Training where he saw time all over the Cardinals' infield, he's opened the season hitting .382/.421/.529 over eight games.
Cardinals prospects stats »

Pirates: Will Craig, 1B (No. 15) -- 2-for-3, solo HR (6), BB (Triple-A Indianapolis)
The homers keep coming for Craig, who's now gone deep in back-to-back games and six times for the season, good for a share of the Minor League lead. After hitting a total of eight home runs in 186 games during his first two seasons, the 2016 first-rounder broke out last season with a 20-homer campaign. With Craig's current pace, a new career-high in 2019 seems increasingly likely.
Pirates prospects stats »

Reds: Jonathan India, 3B (No. 4, MLB No. 51) -- 1-for-4, HR (2), 2 RBI (Class A Advanced Daytona)
India put Daytona up for good with his two-run homer to left-center field in the seventh inning. Last summer, after the Reds selected him with the No. 5 overall pick in the Draft, he went deep six times in 150 at-bats. He's now gone deep twice in 38 at-bats this season, and in the pitcher-friendly Florida State League, too.

NATIONAL LEAGUE WEST

D-backs: Jake McCarthy, OF (No. 8) -- 1-for-3, 2B, R, BB (Class A Advanced Visalia)
McCarthy has now hit in six straight for the Rawhide after an 0-for-12 start to his season. The No. 39 overall pick in last year's Draft was sent straight to the California League for his first full season after putting up a .288/.375/.443 slash line and 21 steals across two levels in his pro debut.
D-backs prospects stats »

Dodgers: Tony Gonsolin, RHP (No. 4) -- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K; Will Smith, C (No. 5) -- 2-for-4, HR (2), 2 RBI (Triple-A Oklahoma City)
Starting the opener of a doubleheader, Gonsolin cruised through five innings. The right-hander has surrendered just five hits in nine innings this season, but he has issued five walks -- something that came back to bite him in his first start, but an issue he was able to work around Saturday. Smith, who was held hitless for the first time all year in his previous game, pushed his average to .364 and his RBI total to six after hitting his second homer of the year.
Dodgers prospects stats »

Giants: Seth Corry, LHP (No. 25) -- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K (Class A Augusta)
Corry, a third-round pick from the 2017 Draft, is off to a strong start in his full-season debut. The 20-year-old threw three hitless frames in his season debut and was nearly as dominant this time around. In total, Corry has thrown seven scoreless innings and struck out 14.
Giants prospects stats »

Padres: Tirso Ornelas, OF (No.16) -- 2-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, 3 R, BB (Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore)
The 19-year-old outfielder is hitting .333 (1.002 OPS) after his fifth multihit effort in six games for the Storm. He homered in this one, hitting a third-inning solo shot for his first of the season. He's off to a strong start after a severe hand bruise ended his 2018 season in July.
Padres prospects stats »

Rockies: Vince Fernandez, OF (No. 25) -- 1-for-3, HR (3), 2 RBI, BB (Double-A Hartford)
Another day, another Fernandez homer. Not only has the 23-year-old homered in three straight games, but his past five hits have all gone for extra bases as he's 5-for-10 with three homer and two doubles over the past three games.
