Black History Month

In honor of Black History Month, the Pirates are celebrating Pittsburgh's rich Negro League history. Pittsburgh was home to two of the most historic Negro League franchises: the Pittsburgh Crawfords and the Homestead Grays. Pittsburgh fielded an array of the game's top stars -- Josh Gibson, Leroy "Satchel" Paige, Buck Leonard and others -- unrivaled in the city's rich sporting past. The Pirates remain committed to educating and celebrating the legacy of the Negro Leagues with Pirates fans of all ages and backgrounds, not just during Black History Month, but all year long.

Pirates Manager of Community Outreach Joel Gray sat down with First Base Coach Tarrik Brock to discuss Negro League Baseball's impact on the game.

It would be difficult to find someone more passionate about what they do for a living than Bob Kendrick, the president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (NLBM) in Kansas City. More than 100 members of the Pirates’ organization -- in Pittsburgh and in Bradenton, Fla. -- witnessed that enthusiasm when he spoke to the group via Zoom on Friday as the team launched its diversity, equity and inclusion speaker series.

“We chose Bob to kick off this series here during Black History Month so he could talk about the long and rich history of Negro Leagues baseball and its impact on American culture, and the long, rich history of the Negro Leagues in Pittsburgh and the impact that had,” Pirates president Travis Williams said.
