The Cubs were credited with a triple play in the seventh inning of Wednesday night's 12-7 loss to the Reds at Great American Ball Park when third baseman Kris Bryant snared a liner off the bat of Shogo Akiyama, stepped on third and fired to first to end the frame. It was the first triple play turned by the Cubs since May 10, 1997, against the Giants.

Bryant caught the ball on the fly, according to the ruling on the field, although replays suggest that the ball may have bounced before entering Bryant's glove. Fly balls or line drives fielded by a defensive player in the infield are not eligible for replay review.

"I was convinced [I caught it]," Bryant said. "I just watched the video now. I don't know. It's kind of hard to tell. ... I guess I can put that on my list of things that I've accomplished. I don't think I've ever turned a triple play in my life. So that's pretty cool."

The triple play came with the bases loaded, Duane Underwood Jr. pitching and Cincinnati leading, 12-5.

"I couldn't see it. It happened really fast," Cubs manager David Ross said. "You look up and you see [umpire] Larry Vanover punching him out. I hit into a triple play here, so that's the last time, I think, I'd seen one. K.B. was nice. I've never been on a team that actually turned a triple play, so it was really cool.

"And Duane, I was telling him, 'That's the kind of thing we want. When I bring you in, bases loaded, nobody out, a triple play.' That's a nice little pick-me-up when he walked off."

The last time the Reds hit into a triple play, Joey Votto lined out 3-6 in Milwaukee on Sept. 23, 2016.
