Reds add 2 NDFAs, bumping total to 10

The Reds added two more players to their non-drafted free-agent pool, signing outfielder Alex McGarry and shortstop Gus Steiger to contracts on Friday. The Reds added two more players to their non-drafted free-agent pool, signing outfielder Alex McGarry and shortstop Gus Steiger to contracts on Friday.

As of June 14, teams were eligible to sign any non-drafted free agent for a maximum of $20,000. The additions of McGarry and Steiger bring the Reds’ total to 10 signees.

Reds' first round of undrafted free agents

McGarry, 22, batted .288 (17-for-59) with six doubles, three homers and 13 RBIs over 14 games in Oregon State University’s truncated 2020 season. In two seasons with the Beavers, McGarry, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound native of Vancouver, Wash., slashed .292/.391/.495 over 63 games. He began his collegiate career at Tacoma Community College.

He was named to the all Pac-12 first team in 2019.

Steiger, 21, batted .321 with five doubles and six RBIs over 14 games for South Dakota State University during the abbreviated 2020 season. A native of Minnetonka, Minn., the 5-foot-11 Steiger slashed .319/.367/.435 over 112 games with the Jackrabbits. He was named to the All-Summit League first team in 2019.
