CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Reds are saddened by the passing of former first baseman and 1990 World Series champion Todd Benzinger, who died Wednesday at the age of 63.
Benzinger played three seasons with the Reds from 1989-91 and was a key contributor during the 1990 wire-to-wire championship season.
“Todd will forever be remembered by Reds fans for catching the final out of the 1990 World Series, but those of us who had the privilege of knowing him will remember so much more. Todd remained close to the Cincinnati community and was a tremendous friend to the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum, generously participating in our events and sharing his time with fans. We will miss his friendship, his kindness and his presence in our community,” said Rick Walls, executive director of the Reds Hall of Fame Museum.
Todd stayed closely connected to the Reds, contributing his time and talent to the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum and the Reds Community Fund. Todd was a regular participant on the Reds Caravan, Reds Fantasy Camp, Reds Legends Remember program, and a popular guest at Redsfest known for his warmth and graciousness.
Selected by the Boston Red Sox in the second round of the 1981 draft, Benzinger made his Major League debut with Boston in 1987 and was later acquired by the Reds prior to the 1989 season.
Benzinger was born in Dayton, Ky., and graduated from New Richmond High School in New Richmond, Ohio.
Following his playing career, from 2009-10, Benzinger was the manager at Class A Dayton. He remained in New Richmond and was very active in youth baseball and dedicated considerable time to coaching and mentoring young players.
Todd will be remembered with great affection and gratitude for his place in one of the most memorable chapters in Reds history. The thoughts and prayers of the entire Reds organization are with Todd’s family, friends, former teammates and all who knew and loved him.
