The Trade Deadline may be seven weeks away, but it appears the Giants are already testing the waters on a summer sale.
Multiple sources told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand that San Francisco is open to offers for first baseman Rafael Devers, shortstop Willy Adames and third baseman Matt Chapman, though the club has no plans to move ace Logan Webb or any of its young players. The club has not confirmed the news.
The Athletic first reported Monday that the Giants "have not fully committed to becoming sellers" but had begun gauging the market for some of their players. A report from ESPN's Buster Olney later on Monday specifically named Devers, Adames and Chapman as players the club is willing to move.
The Giants still have time to get back in the race, but they are facing a steep climb and haven’t shown enough to suggest they are close to making a run. San Francisco entered Tuesday with the second-worst record (29-43) in the National League behind the Rockies.
With Webb not expected to be available, the Giants' most in-demand trade chip this summer is likely to be second baseman Luis Arraez, given his strong season, reasonable salary and modest prospect cost as a pending free agent.
Signed to a one-year, $12 million deal in free agency last offseason, the three-time batting champion is hitting .319 with two homers and a .787 OPS this year. On top of that, Arraez has been one of the best defensive second basemen in the game -- a remarkable turnaround for a player whose fielding drew a lot of criticism in the past, to the point where he spent more time at first base and DH than second base in 2024-25.
Starting pitcher Robbie Ray is another obvious trade candidate as a pending free agent. But his 7.16 ERA since May 13 and 5.16 expected ERA on the year makes the 34-year-old a less appealing option than Arraez.
Trades involving any of Devers, Adames or Chapman are less likely due to the money they are still owed on long-term contracts.
Monday marked one year since the Giants shockingly acquired Devers -- and his entire remaining contract -- from the Red Sox. The 29-year-old, who signed a 10-year, $313.5 million extension with the Red Sox in 2023 that runs through ’33, has slashed .235/.323/.438 (117 OPS+) with 29 homers and 209 strikeouts over 162 games in a Giants uniform. His OPS+ this year is just 101.
Adames, 30, is in the second year of the seven-year, $182 million contract he signed with the Giants in free agency after the 2024 season. While the shortstop last season became the first player since Barry Bonds in 2004 to have a 30-homer campaign with the Giants, he owns a .226/.305/.420 slash (106 OPS+) with San Francisco -- including a 96 OPS+ in ’26.
Chapman has been the best of the high-priced trio with a 119 OPS+ in 2026, though he had just a .633 OPS through the end of May before heating up in June (1.421 OPS). A five-time Gold Glove winner at third base, the 33-year-old is signed through 2030 after inking a six-year, $151 million contract extension with the Giants in September ’24.
