Second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. was back in the Yankees' lineup for their series opener against the Rays at Tropicana Field on Monday, a day after he left Sunday’s game against the Twins in the sixth inning because of right big toe discomfort.
X-rays on the toe were negative on Sunday, and Chisholm was set to be reassessed further on Monday.
Chisholm hurt the toe after rounding first base on a single off right-hander Joe Ryan in the second inning. Chisholm remained in the game and took another at-bat in the fifth, when he hit a fly ball to right fielder Luke Keaschall and seemed to limp up the first-base line before heading into the dugout.
Chisholm was replaced at second base by José Caballero, who made the switch from third. Amed Rosario entered the game at third base.
Chisholm has been dealing with this toe injury since May 13, 2023, when he was with the Marlins. He originally injured the toe on the cement block of the left-center-field wall at loanDepot park as he tried to make an inning-ending catch.
“There is a little bit of throbbing in there. When you aggravate it, it hurts,” Chisholm said. “You don’t move the same [way] sometimes. It was a huge relief [knowing] I’m good.”
