The Boston Red Sox today signed first baseman Mitch Moreland to a two-year contract through the 2019 season. 
President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.
Moreland, 32, played for the Red Sox in 2017 after spending his first 10 professional seasons (2007-16) in the Texas Rangers organization. In his debut season with Boston, the left-handed hitter batted .246 (125-for-508) with 22 home runs and 79 RBI, setting career highs in games (149), at-bats, runs scored (73), doubles (34), and walks (57). He reached base in seven of his 15 postseason plate appearances, going 5-for-13 (.385) with two doubles, two walks, and four runs scored in four Division Series games against the Houston Astros.
Despite fracturing his left big toe on June 13, Moreland did not spend any time on the disabled list in 2017. He set a Red Sox franchise record-and tied an AL record-by hitting at least one double in seven consecutive games from April 7-13, as he led the majors with 12 doubles in April. Moreland homered in three consecutive games for the first time in his career from May 18-21, then repeated the feat from June 24-26. In 27 games from July 30-August 30, he hit .346 (28-for-81) with six home runs and a 1.071 OPS.
Moreland has hit at least 20 home runs and 20 doubles in each of the last three seasons, joining José Abreu as the AL's only first basemen to accomplish that feat. In that same three-year span, Moreland recorded a higher batting average against left-handed pitchers (.255) than versus right-handers (.252). In 2017, his .341 on-base percentage against lefties was the highest single-season mark of his career. A 2016 Gold Glove Award winner and 2017 finalist, Moreland leads AL first basemen with 17 defensive runs saved at the position in the last two years, according to FanGraphs.
Selected by Texas in the 17th round of the 2007 June Draft, Moreland has hit .252 (758-for-3,004) with 132 home runs and 433 RBI in 922 major league games over eight seasons with the Rangers (2010-16) and Red Sox (2017). He has also played in 37 games in six trips to the postseason, and in 2010 he helped Texas reach the World Series by hitting .348 (16-for-46) in 15 playoff games.
Born in Amory, MS, Moreland currently resides in Pelham, AL, with his wife, Susannah, and their children, Crue and Swayze.
