Red Sox optimistic after initial scans for Contreras (hand)

May 10th, 2026

BOSTON -- had a very short day at Fenway Park on Sunday, logging just one inning during Boston's 4-1 loss after he was hit on the right hand in his first at-bat.

The Red Sox first baseman had a 1-1 count, but after a successful ABS challenge, Rays starter Nick Martinez came inside with a 94 mph sinker. The team announced that Contreras had sustained a right hand contusion.

“The quick scans that we do here came back negative, which is good,” interim manager Chad Tracy said postgame. “Sore. That’s all we know at this point. Obviously, we have an off-day tomorrow that helps a lot. We’ll reevaluate tomorrow and the next day and see how he feels. Hopefully, he is OK there.”

Contreras, who is hitting .259 (35-for-135) with a team-leading eight home runs and 23 RBIs, was attended to by Tracy and an athletic trainer, shaking his hand as he slowly made his way to first base.

Contreras was replaced on defense by Andruw Monasterio to start the second inning.
