BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox have added catcher Elih Marrero to the team’s 2023 Spring Training roster as a non-roster invitee.

Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Marrero, 25, is attending his first Major League Spring Training camp. A Miami native, he was selected by the Red Sox in the eighth round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft after attending Mississippi State University and St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens, Florida. The switch hitter spent the 2022 season with Double-A Portland, appearing in 79 games and batting .207 (51-for-246) while throwing out 22 of 61 runners attempting to steal (36.1%). Marrero is the son of former Major League catcher Eli Marrero, who played in 724 games over 10 seasons (1997-2006).
