BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today claimed right-handed pitcher Kyle Tyler off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels and optioned him to Triple-A Worcester. To make room for Tyler on the 40-man roster, the club designated infielder Hudson Potts for assignment.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Tyler, 25, made his major league debut last season, posting a 2.92 ERA (4 ER/12.1 IP) in five relief appearances for the Angels. The right-hander began his big league career with 7.0 consecutive scoreless innings in three appearances, tossing 3.0 scoreless frames on September 5 against the Texas Rangers and again on September 14 against the Chicago White Sox. He spent the majority of the 2021 season with Triple-A Salt Lake and Double-A Rocket City in the Angels system, combining to go 6-4 with a 3.66 ERA (35 ER/86.0 IP) in 20 appearances (14 starts). Originally selected by the Angeles in the 20th round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of the University of Oklahoma, Tyler is 17-6 with a 3.25 ERA (84 ER/232.1 IP) in 60 career minor league appearances (32 starts).

Potts, 23, played in 78 games for Double-A Portland in 2021, batting .217 (61-for-281) with 11 home runs and 47 RBI while making 73 starts at third base. Originally selected by the San Diego Padres in the first round (24th overall) in the 2016 June Draft, the right-handed hitter has batted .250 (480-for-1,920) with 68 home runs and 271 RBI in 501 minor league games between the San Diego (2016-20) and Boston (2020-21) systems.
