Red Sox reinstate right-handed pitcher Zack Kelly from paternity leave list

Club options right-handed pitcher Josh Winckowski to Triple-A Worcester

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today reinstated right-handed pitcher Zack Kelly from the Paternity Leave List. To make room for Kelly on the active roster, the club optioned right-handed pitcher Josh Winckowski to Triple-A Worcester following yesterday’s game.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Kelly, 27, was selected to the active roster on August 29 and made the first three appearances of his Major League career before being placed on the Paternity Leave List on September 2. Each of the right-hander’s first two outings were scoreless before he allowed two runs in 1.0 inning on September 1 against the Texas Rangers. Kelly also has a 2.72 ERA (15 ER/49.2 IP) and 13.05 strikeouts per nine innings (72 strikeouts) in 44 outings for Worcester this year.

Winckowski, 24, started yesterday’s game against the Rangers and allowed two runs in 4.0 innings. The right-hander is 5-7 with a 5.75 ERA (43 ER/67.1 IP) in 14 starts for Boston this season. He has also made 10 starts for Worcester in 2022, posting a 3.83 ERA (20 ER/47.0 IP).
