Red Sox select left-handed pitcher Matt Dermody to active Major League roster

Club Options Left-Handed Pitcher Chris Murphy to Triple-A Worcester

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today selected left-handed pitcher Matt Dermody to the active Major League roster from Triple-A Worcester. To make room for Dermody, the club optioned left-handed pitcher Chris Murphy to Worcester following last night’s game against the Cleveland Guardians. The Red Sox’ 40-man roster is now at 40. Dermody will wear number 67.

Dermody, 32, has gone 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA (22 ER/44.0 IP) in nine games (eight starts) for Worcester this season, most recently starting on May 28 at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Signed by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent on January 25, the left-hander did not allow a run in 8.1 innings over four Grapefruit League games for Boston. Selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 28th round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Iowa, Dermody owns a 5.60 ERA (17 ER/27.1 IP) in 30 Major League relief appearances with Toronto (2016-17) and the Chicago Cubs (2020-22).

Murphy, 25, made his Major League debut last night against Cleveland, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings of relief with two hits, one walk, and five strikeouts. The left-hander has also posted a 7.71 ERA (34 ER/39.2 IP) in 10 games (nine starts) for Worcester this season. Selected by Boston in the sixth round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of San Diego, the California native is ranked among the Red Sox’ top 15 prospects by both Baseball America (No. 13) and MLB.com (No. 14).
