BOSTON, MA — Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu and infielder/outfielder Ceddanne Rafaela have each received a 2025 Rawlings Gold Glove Award. In the American League, Abreu won the award for right fielders and Rafaela won the award for center fielders. It marks Abreu's second career Gold Glove Award (also 2024) and Rafaela's first. The announcement was made tonight by Rawlings on ESPN.
The Gold Glove Award honors the best defenders at each position in each league. Major League managers and coaches, voting only within their league and unable to vote for players on their own teams, account for 75 percent of the selection process; the SABR Defensive Index statistic accounts for the other 25 percent.
Since the award was founded in 1957, 25 different Red Sox have combined to earn 52 Gold Glove Awards. This is the first season since 2018 in which multiple Red Sox players received a Gold Glove Award (Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Ian Kinsler). It also marks the fifth season in which multiple Red Sox outfielders have won a Gold Glove Award, previously doing so in 1968 (Carl Yastrzemski, Reggie Smith), 1978-79 (Dwight Evans, Fred Lynn), and 2018 (Betts, Bradley Jr.).
Abreu, 26, ranked among American League leaders in right field in outs above average (first, eight), fielding run value (first, eight), defensive runs saved (second, 15), assists (second, seven), games (third, 104), and innings (fourth, 847.1). The Venezuela native also ranked in MLB's 97th percentile in arm strength (94.2 MPH). Abreu is the eighth Red Sox player to win consecutive Gold Glove Awards, joining Frank Malzone (two, 1957-58), George Scott (two, 1967-68), Carl Yastrzemski (three, 1967-69), Dwight Evans (two, 1978-79; five, 1981-85), Fred Lynn (three, 1978-80), Dustin Pedroia (two, 2013-14), and Mookie Betts (four, 2016-19). He joins Yastrzemski, Evans, Lynn, and Betts as the only Red Sox outfielders to do so.
Rafaela, 25, led Major League center fielders in defensive runs saved (20), outs above average (22), and fielding run value (22). The Curaçao native ranked second in the American League in games (141) and innings (1,167.1) in center field. Rafaela's 20 defensive runs saved in center field were MLB's second most of any player at any position, trailing only Steven Kwan's 22 in left field. He also won a 2025 Fielding Bible Award from Sports Info Solutions in center field.
Fan voting for the Rawlings Platinum Glove Award presented by SABR begins tonight at 9:30 p.m. ET at www.rawlings.com and continues through Wednesday, November 5, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Fans can select only one 2025 Rawlings Gold Glove Award Winner from each league to take home this "best of the best" honor. A combination of the national fan vote and the SABR Defensive Index statistic will determine the Platinum Gold Glove Award honorees. Winners will be unveiled during the Rawlings Gold Glove Award Ceremony on Friday, November 7.
