Flande exits after line drive hits him in knee

DENVER -- Rockies starting pitcher Yohan Flande left Saturday night's 10-2 win win over the Padres in the top of the third inning after being hit hard by a ball off the bat of Jedd Gyorko.

He sustained a contusion of the left patellar tendon. X-rays were negative.

With two outs and a man on first, Gyorko lined a shot back at Flande and bounced it off his left knee and into foul territory for a double. Flande ran to third to cover the base as Nolan Arenado pursued the ball, and after a visit from the training staff, he walked off the field on his own.

"He was a trooper," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of Flande's condition. "He got smoked. It hit him square on the knee, but he seems to be all right. I don't know how, but he seems to be doing OK. He came out of it a lot better than I thought he would."

Flande had a 5-1 lead when he left the game, with the lone run coming in the previous at-bat. Wil Myers singled to center to open the inning, advanced on a deep fly to center, then scored on Justin Upton's two-out single to left.

"He was doing what he usually does," Weiss said of Flande. "He throws strikes and keeps the game under control. That's what he's done all year for us. He was doing his thing."

Flande struggled in his previous four starts, going 0-2 with a 7.50 ERA, allowing 15 runs in 18 innings. He was on track to get his first win since Aug. 20 against the Nationals when he turned it over to the bullpen.

Long reliever Christian Bergman came in with men on second and third and two outs and retired the first batter he faced to hold the Padres to one run in the frame.

"That's what [Bergman's] been real good at -- coming in in those types of situations and putting up zeros," Weiss said. That was big for us. You lose your starter that early in the game, that's usually a tough situation. But Bergy came in and settled things down."
