DETROIT -- Seven years after the Tigers raised a flag for Hall of Fame broadcaster Ernie Harwell, they did the same for his broadcast partner. The team remembered longtime radio voice Paul Carey on Friday night in a pregame ceremony at Comerica Park.
The Tigers had just finished up their last homestand when Carey passed away last week. Friday was their first home game since. As they did when Harwell -- Carey's broadcast partner for 18 years and colleague for over 20 years -- passed away in 2009, the Tigers raised a flag with Carey's initials on the center-field flagpole, where it wil fly for the rest of the season.
Carey, part of Tigers' radio broadcasts with Harwell from 1973-1991, passed away Tuesday night at age 88. The news hit home to Tigers fans who remember listening to the pair growing up. Carey was an unmistakable voice of Michigan summers and an influential voice for many broadcasters in the game today. The Tigers remembered the era with a video tribute before the ceremony.
