About the Youth Designers

Avahnii Lewis is an illustrator and graphic designer based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She aims to tell stories through her art. Working her way up through an Apprenticeship at Juxtaposition Arts since 2016, Avahnii is currently an Advanced Apprentice in the nonprofit's Graphic Design Lab. As an Apprentice, she has worked on dozens of illustration, marketing, and graphic design projects. Some of the most notable clients she has worked with include the NCAA, 3M, Mill City Museum, and the Guthrie Theater. Avahnii has also been a dedicated member of the Walker Art Center's Teen Arts Council since 2017. In 2019, she had the opportunity to complete a design internship at KNOCK, Inc., a creative agency in Minneapolis. In this role, she worked on branding for a multitude of businesses and worked on projects spanning from logo and website designs to art directing photoshoots. That same year, Avahnii was named one of "9 of the Twin Cities' most inspiring teens" in the Minnesota Next edition of City Pages for her design work.

Essence Enwere is a graphic designer and illustrator who specializes in lettering and typography. She has been an Apprentice at Juxtaposition Arts since 2017 and is currently an Advanced Apprentice in the Screen Printing and Textiles Lab. In her words: "I create my work to have two main outcomes. The first outcome is for audience participation and analysis. I want the audience to dive into my work; the longer they look, the more they should discover. The second is the realization of the human experience, whether it's joy, sadness, intellect, or simply the experience of being impressed or fascinated. I want my work to resonate deeper than what you might see on the surface."
