NEW YORK -- Tobias Myers’ brief stay in the Minors is coming to an end.
The Mets intend to call up Myers to start their Monday series opener in Cincinnati, manager Carlos Mendoza said. Myers is stretched out enough to throw the first 2-3 innings, after which the Mets can either turn to bulk man David Peterson, or mix and match relievers in a true bullpen game.
Myers, 27, was optioned on May 30 amidst a roster crunch. He was not pitching well at the time, with a 7.94 ERA over his most recent 10 appearances.
But Myers, who put up a 2.05 ERA in his first 10 outings, appears to have righted himself in the Minors. He did not allow an earned run over three appearances for Triple-A Syracuse. In the third of them, Myers threw 36 pitches over 2 2/3 innings. That suggests he should be capable of throwing up to 45-50 pitches on Monday.
Overall this year, Myers is 0-1 with a 4.05 ERA. The Mets acquired him from the Brewers in the Freddy Peralta trade last offseason.
Should the Mets proceed with a true bullpen game on Monday and save Peterson for Tuesday, that would allow them to give their other four starters an extra day of rest between outings.
