Short porch in Bronx continues to sting Weaver

NEW YORK -- Three home runs, all of them just beyond the Sony sign of Yankee Stadium's short right-field porch, all of them traveling less than 360 feet. That was Jered Weaver's undoing in the Angels' 8-7 loss to the Yankees in the Bronx on Friday night.

This is no place for someone like him.

"Going into it, you know it's not a fly-ball-pitcher-friendly ballpark," Weaver said after giving up seven runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.

"That's why I haven't really had much success here. You get people out in their front foot and get them to pop it up and it turns into a home run. Regardless of that, I need to do a better job of pitching here, obviously. Pretty frustrating. I felt like everything was working."

Weaver -- with a 1.98 ERA in his previous five starts -- has now given up 10 home runs in 31 career innings at the new Yankee Stadium, a ballpark where his ERA is 8.71.

In the series opener, he gave up a second-inning two-run homer to Stephen Drew, a third-inning two-run homer to Mark Teixeira and a sixth-inning solo homer to Drew, who recorded his third career multihomer game. Drew's homers were projected by Statcast™ to land 352 feet and 356 feet away, respectively, while Teixeira's was projected at 346 feet.

Right field at Angel Stadium, the pitcher-friendly venue where Weaver has thrived his entire career, is 350 feet down the line and 370 in the gap.

"You're going to go in and pitch to your strengths at any ballpark; it doesn't matter where you're at," Weaver said when asked if he needs to change his approach against left-handed hitters in Yankee Stadium. "Maybe I need to switch something up here, but for the most part, I had my fair share of opportunities to get outs in certain situations, and they were able to capitalize. Tip your cap to them."
