The Phillies recalled right-hander Alex McFarlane, the team’s No. 19 prospect per MLB Pipeline, from Double-A Reading prior to Friday’s game against the Braves in Atlanta.
McFarlane, who joined the Phillies organization as a fourth-round Draft pick in 2022, takes the active roster spot that opened up when veteran pitcher Taijuan Walker was released on Thursday.
With Philadelphia’s 26-man roster now full, the club will need to make a move to open up a spot when it activates Zack Wheeler from the IL for Saturday’s start.
After missing all of 2024 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, McFarlane returned as a starter last year, but he struggled and was moved to the bullpen late in the season.

The hard-throwing righty has continued to pitch exclusively in relief this season, posting a 1.42 ERA with 10 strikeouts and four walks over 6 1/3 innings in Double-A.
When he makes his MLB debut, McFarlane will become just the 16th player (fifth pitcher) born in the U.S. Virgin Islands to appear in a game.
