Astros coach Pettis to rejoin club next week

June 30th, 2021

HOUSTON -- Astros third-base coach Gary Pettis, who has been away from the team while recovering from multiple myeloma, has returned to Houston and is scheduled to rejoin the team prior to Tuesday’s game against the A’s at Minute Maid Park.

Pettis, who is currently quarantining, will initially take part in pregame workouts and activities when he rejoins the club Tuesday and then eventually resume his duties as third-base coach. Pettis has served as the Astros' third-base coach since 2015.

“Gary’s honest, he’s very intelligent and he was also a player,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said. “He knows how difficult it is on a daily basis to play. What you see is what you get. It’s hard not to like a guy if he’s as consistent in person and he doesn’t change from day to day.”

Pettis left the Astros last September because of hip discomfort, which led to the diagnosis of multiple myeloma. He missed the rest of the regular season and the postseason while getting treatment. The American Cancer Society defines multiple myeloma as a cancer of plasma cells.

Pettis, 63, came to Houston after spending eight years with the Rangers, having spent time as their third-base coach (2013-14) and first-base coach (2007-12). He also served on the Major League staffs of the Mets (2003-04) and White Sox (2001-02) and had a handful of Minor League coaching stops.

A five-time Gold Glove Award winner, Pettis played 11 years in the big leagues with the Angels (1982-87), Tigers (1988-89, '92), Rangers (1990-91) and Padres (’92).
