Altuve, Springer honored by All-Star support

HOUSTON -- Despite missing significant time with injuries this year, both and said that they would represent the Astros in the All-Star Game presented by Mastercard if they’re voted in by the fans. Altuve and Springer were two of seven Astros that were finalists for the Starters Election for the July 9 game in Cleveland.

“We feel like we’ve always had a great team, and the fans resonate with that,” Astros manager AJ Hinch said. “Houston fans have really come out and voted and some of our guys have gone global so to speak and they get a lot of fan attention everywhere we go. A lot of our guys deserve to be there and I hope this vote goes in our favor at a lot of positions and these guys get to experience the All-Star Game for the first time for some guys and multiple guys for others.”

Joining Altuve and Springer as finalists were third baseman Alex Bregman, outfielder Michael Brantley, catcher Robinson Chirinos, outfielder Josh Reddick and shortstop Carlos Correa, who’s on the injured list and has been ruled out of playing in the All-Star Game by Hinch.

Altuve, a six-time All-Star, entered Wednesday hitting .251 with 10 homers and 22 RBIs and was a finalist at second base with DJ LeMahieu of the Yankees and Tommy La Stella of the Angels.

“At this point, I’m very surprised where I’m at right now because with all the adversities I had this year -- I didn’t play good in the beginning and then I got hurt -- and just to see my name out there in the top three, that means I have a lot of support from the fans and that’s what matters at the end of the day,” Altuve said. “I’m really happy. Whatever happens is going to happen, but I really wish the guys that are having All-Star seasons to make it.”

Altuve returned to the Astros’ lineup a week ago after missing 35 games with a left hamstring strain/right leg fatigue. Springer came off the injured list on Tuesday after missing 27 games with a strained left hamstring. Springer, hitting .307 with 17 homers and 43 RBIs, was one of nine finalists in the outfield, along with Reddick.

“The support is obviously huge, and I understand I missed a month or so, but the fans to be supportive of me is an honor,” said Springer, an All-Star in 2017-18. “If I’m voted and I’m allowed to play, I’d love to go support them and represent the organization and our great city.”

Bregman, last year’s All-Star Game MVP Award winner, was eyeing his second consecutive All-Star Game. Brantley was aiming for his fourth Midsummer Classic appearance, which would come in the city he played for 10 years, Cleveland. Chirinos and Reddick have never been selected to the All-Star Game.
