June 6th, 2022

HOUSTON, TX - The Astros have signed OF Yordan Alvarez to a six-year contract extension covering the 2023-2028 seasons, General Manager James Click announced today. Additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Alvarez, 24, has been one of the top hitters in the Majors since making his debut in 2019. In his young career, he has already won multiple awards, including being named the BBWAA American League Rookie of the Year in 2019 and the MVP of the American League Championship Series in 2021. He is one of several players to receive contract extensions from the Astros since 2018. That list includes Jose Altuve, Michael Brantley, Alex Bregman, Yuli Gurriel, Martin Maldonado, Lance McCullers, Jr., Ryan Pressly, and Justin Verlander.

This season, Alvarez currently ranks second in the American League in home runs (15), third in OPS (.972), tied for third in slugging pct. (.592) and eighth in RBI (33). Alvarez is also hitting a club-best .295 currently. On the Astros just-concluded, 9-game road trip, Alvarez hit a scorching .486 (17x35) with four home runs and nine RBI while posting a 1.453 OPS (.538 OBP, .914 SLG). The Astros were 6-3 on the trip.

Additionally, Alvarez leads the Majors in hard-hit percentage (65.2%) this season. OF Aaron Judge is second (61.5%).

Alvarez, who was acquired by the Astros from the Los Angeles Dodgers via trade on Aug. 1, 2016, had an historic rookie campaign after being called up for his Major League debut on June 9, 2019. For starters, he became the first player in franchise history to homer in each of his first two games and later set club records for homers within a player’s first 12 games (7), 11 games (6), 10 games (5) and five games (4). For the season, in just 87 games, he hit .313 with 26 doubles, 27 home runs and 78 RBI while posting a .412 on-base percentage and a .655 slugging percentage.

He also established a new MLB record for OPS by a rookie with a 1.067 mark (minimum 350 plate appearances), surpassing Shoeless Joe Jackson’s record of 1.058 set in 1911. In addition to winning the BBWAA AL Rookie of the Year Award, Alvarez was also named the Sporting News AL Rookie of the Year and the MLBPA Player’s Choice Most Outstanding AL Rookie. He also won the AL Rookie of the Month Award in three consecutive months (June, July, August).

After being limited to just two games in the 2020 pandemic-shortened season due to knee injuries, Alvarez rebounded in 2021 to hit 33 home runs, 35 doubles and drive in 104 runs, all career bests. In the process, he became the youngest Astros player to reach the 30-homer mark and the second-youngest to reach 100 RBI. In the ALCS vs. Boston, Alvarez earned MVP honors after hitting .522 with a home run and six RBI while posting a 1.408 OPS. His .522 batting average is the sixth-highest for a postseason series in MLB history.

Since making his MLB debut on June 9, 2019, Alvarez leads the AL in both slugging percentage (.585) and OPS (.959) in that span (min. 250 games).
