OAKLAND -- A's right-hander is set to rejoin the rotation on Monday night in the series opener against the Rangers. Bassitt landed on the injured list with a right shin contusion after being hit by a ball in Japan during the team's exhibition game against the Nippon-Ham Fighters in March.

"We've seen a guy that's now kind of fully back to his best health," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "Velo looked like it picked up again this spring. He was pretty confident in what he was doing, we saw that in Spring Training. Heard the same on the reports down there. I think he's probably as ready as he's ever been."

The A's recalled Bassitt from Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday to fill the void left by , who went to the injured list with a lumbar strain. Melvin said it's unlikely Estrada will be ready to return after the 10-day minimum, so Bassitt could be getting multiple looks as a starter this stint.

"He saw another doctor [on Friday]," Melvin said of Estrada. "He's had these issues for a while, so we gotta make sure that calms down. I'm not sure we're there with it yet."

Bassitt is set to make his season debut after a promising campaign in 2018, when he returned from Tommy John surgery to post a 3.02 ERA in 11 games (seven starts). This month he has made three rehab starts, two with Las Vegas, going 11 innings with a 3.27 ERA and a 16-to-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He's pushed his pitch count to 72, and Melvin said Bassitt should be able to go up to 90 or 95 pitches on Monday.

"It's a full complement," Melvin said. "Nowadays, what is length from a starter? He gives you five or six innings, you feel pretty good about it. And he can definitely do that."
