Blue Jays sign Rodríguez

The Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to terms with RHP Yariel Rodríguez on a five-year contract (US $32,000,000).

Rodríguez, 26, pitched in 2022 for the Chunichi Dragons of the Nippon Professional Baseball league, posting a 1.15 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP over 56 appearances, earning NPB’s Central League Most Valuable Setup Man award. Over a three-year run with the club, the Camaguey, Cuba, native went 10-10 with a 3.03 ERA across 79 games. Prior to his time in Japan, the 6-1, 214lb. righty spent six seasons in the Cuban National Series, pitching to a 3.30 ERA over 91 games (72 starts). Additionally, Rodríguez represented Cuba at the 2023 World Baseball Classic, making a pair of starts while allowing two runs over 7.1 combined innings with five hits, six walks, and 10 strikeouts.

To make room on the 40-man roster, UTIL Otto Lopez has been designated for assignment.
