Saving the game with a wall-crashing catch? Just another day for 'Air Lara'

MILWAUKEE -- Did rookie outfielder need to leave his feet to make the play of the game for the Brewers in Friday’s 2-1 win over the Braves?

One member of the local media didn’t think so.

“Can we not jump?” asked Jacob Misiorowski, towering over the media scrum. “Can we make it easier?”

Lara laughed.

“I didn’t want to scare you there,” Lara said via Brewers translator Daniel de Mondesert. “It was more about getting scared of the wall there. Making that play against the wall, I just had to give a little jump. But don’t be worried, because you have me out there.”

Lara’s leaping, wall-banging grab of Matt Olson’s deep drive in the sixth inning wound up saving a run, because Michael Harris II followed with a double. It helped Misiorowski navigate a sixth scoreless inning on a day he didn’t have his very best fastball, but did enough to remain the NL Cy Young Award frontrunner while pushing the Brewers toward their MLB-best 80th win.

Afterward, he dabbled in reporting by grilling Lara, who already has been called “Spider-Man” after making a pair of dazzling catches in an 11-inning win over the Twins on Aug. 9.

Misiorowski has another in mind.

“How do you feel about the nickname 'Air Lara'?” Misiorowski asked.

“I enjoy it,” Lara said. “I’ll take any nickname the guys will give me. I’m always out there trying to help the pitchers. Any play that I can to make your lives easier.”
