SAN DIEGO -- Trent Grisham landed on the injured list for the second time this season after reinjuring his right hamstring early in the Yankees’ 3-2, 10-inning loss to the Padres on Friday evening.
The club on Saturday placed Grisham on the 10-day IL with a hamstring strain and recalled outfielder Jasson Domínguez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Grisham has not yet undergone imaging. That will occur either in San Diego or when the team returns home, but New York felt the issue was significant enough to fly Domínguez across the country.
“I know [Grisham] was already moving around, doing stuff today,” Boone said. “It feels like he felt a little bit better today than when he did it a couple of months ago. It’s in a different spot, so we’ll see.”
Domínguez, 23, slashed .230/.270/.380 (46-for-200) with 12 doubles, six homers, 14 RBIs and seven stolen bases in 53 big league games this year.
He was slashing .283/.361/.420 (60-for-212) with eight doubles, seven homers, 30 RBIs and 14 steals in 54 games with the RailRiders.
“A lot of ups and downs in the year, but we’re still here and still playing,” Domínguez said. “That’s the most important thing.”
Grisham exited Friday’s game one inning after he was unable to reach Xander Bogaerts’ second-inning RBI single, getting a late start on the two-out flare.
At the conclusion of the frame, Grisham entered the dugout and immediately approached an athletic trainer, disappearing down the tunnel toward the clubhouse area.
Grisham said he felt the issue initially after a stolen-base attempt in the top of the second.
“It’s disappointing, for sure, but that’s part of the game,” Grisham said. “We know what we’re signing up for. So hopefully, it’s nothing too problematic.”
The 29-year-old Grisham is slashing .211/.308/.395 with 18 homers and 59 RBIs in 121 games. He dealt with a strained right hamstring in mid-June that sent him to the injured list until early July.
Grisham is a two-time National League Gold Glove Award winner with the Padres, but his defense has slipped this year. Entering Friday, Grisham had tallied -8 defensive runs saved, second worst among qualified Major League center fielders. His -6 outs above average rank last at the position.
Boone said he didn’t expect Grisham to catch the ball Bogaerts hit.
“I thought right off the bat, I turned and went, ‘Dang,’” Boone said. “That was my read right away. I’d have to look. I think he was playing pretty deep.”
Heliot Ramos replaced Grisham for the third inning, moving to right field as Spencer Jones switched to center.
With Aaron Judge moving closer to a big league return, the Yankees seemed to be facing an outfield crunch that could have resulted in Jones being optioned to the Minors.
Now, Boone said he expects Jones to get the majority of reps in center field while Grisham is out. Boone said defense is an area in Jones’ game “where I feel like there’s still a lot of room for improvement, but I think overall he’s done a good job.”
“I feel good defensively,” Jones said. “I think it’s just about getting reads and repetitions. We’ll see as the days move on, what’s going on. But I’m just going to keep playing.”
