Cardinals add three pitchers to 40-man roster
Fick, Freeman & Ottavino added to team's Major League roster
ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have added right-handed pitcher Charles (Chuckie) Fick, left-handed pitcher Sam Freeman and right-handed pitcher Adam Ottavino to the club’s 40-man Major League roster. All three players were purchased from Memphis (AAA).
Fick, the Cardinals’ 15th round selection in the June 2007 First-Year Player Draft (472nd overall), appeared in 54 games this season with Memphis and compiled a 5-3 record with a 2.30 ERA. His appearances ranked second on the Redbirds squad and fifth in the Pacific Coast League. He recorded 61 strikeouts in 70.1 innings pitched and opposing batters hit just .180 against him, the lowest average against among PCL relievers. Fick, the son of Cardinals professional scout Chuck Fick, also topped the PCL with 16 Holds.
Freeman, the Cardinals’ 32nd round selection in the June 2008 First-Year Player Draft (965th overall), began the season at Palm Beach (A) before earning a promotion to Springfield (AA) in May. He was a combined 2-2 this season with a 3.16 ERA in 59 games.
Ottavino, the Cardinals 1st round selection in the June 2006 Free-Agent Draft (30th overall), compiled a 7-8 record with a 4.85 ERA in 26 appearances (25 starts) with Memphis this season and finished second on the team with 141.0 innings pitched. He ranked in the Top 10 among Cardinals minor leaguers in games started (T2nd), innings pitched (6th), strikeouts (120, 8th) and strikeouts per nine innings (7.66, 10th).
