Injuries & Moves: Anderson (back) placed on IL; Puk returns

LATEST NEWS

May 13: INF (lower back soreness) placed on IL retroactive to Saturday; LHP (left shoulder fatigue) reinstated from 15-day IL
Anderson was out the past two games with the issue, and given the timing and Anderson's history of lower-body injuries, the decision was made before Monday's game to give him some more time. He'll rehab in Jupiter, Fla. -- a short stint that manager Skip Schumaker said might include a Minor League game or two, if warranted. Anderson, a career .279 hitter, is batting .197, so the extra time could allow for a physical reset as well as a plate approach reset.

Puk, who made the transition to starter from reliever this past offseason, rejoins the roster out of the bullpen. He's been out since April 29.

May 12: RHP optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville, SS 's contract selected and RHP transferred to 60-day injured list
The Marlins elected to go with an extra position player on the active roster. Gray, who had 10 homers for the Jumbo Shrimp, provides backup at shortstop with Tim Anderson dealing with lower back tightness. Soriano made two appearances after being recalled on May 7, giving up four runs in three innings against the Dodgers before tossing 1 2/3 scoreless frames vs. the Phillies. Chargois, who hasn't pitched this season, was moved to the 60-day IL to clear a 40-man roster spot for Gray.

10-day/15-day injured list

IF (lower back soreness)
Expected return: Late May
Anderson missed two games with the issue before he landed on the IL on May 13, retroactive to May 11. He's battled lower-body injuries throughout his career, so the team wanted to exercise caution so the issue didn't linger. Manager Skip Schumaker expected the trip to the IL to be brief and said Anderson will rehab in Jupiter, Fla. He's expected to return once his 10 days are up. (Last updated: May 13)

RHP (right shoulder impingement)
Expected return: TBD
Cabrera has progressed to playing catch on May 13 after he received an injection on May 8 that relieved "a lot of the pain," and he is feeling "really good." Cabrera began the season on the injured list with the same diagnosis, and he also missed a month of the 2023 season with it. Following his 58-pitch start on May 7, the Marlins initially thought it could be a biceps issue. (Last updated: May 13)

RHP (left hamstring strain)
Expected return: TBD
Hoeing, who reported no symptoms on May 13, will be evaluated for a bullpen session in the coming days. He first tweaked his hamstring during Spring Training but pitched through it. His stint on the injured list is retroactive to May 2. (Last updated: May 13)

OF (left hamstring strain)
Expected return: TBD
García is rehabbing in Jupiter, Fla. He hasn’t appeared in a game since April 27 after feeling discomfort in the area a few days earlier. This marks the third straight season García has landed on the IL with a left hamstring strain. (Last updated: May 10)

60-day injured list

RHP (neck spasms)
Expected return: TBD
Chargois is scheduled to throw a bullpen on May 18, and another one on May 21 if all goes well with the first one. He has yet to return to game action since his April 26 appearance with Triple-A Jacksonville and undergoing subsequent tests on his neck. He is rehabbing in Jupiter, Fla.

Chargois first experienced the neck spasms on Feb. 23, and he saw his velocity max out at 92.6 mph -- much lower than his average fastball velo of 96.2 mph in 2023 -- during his Grapefruit League debut on March 12. (Last updated: May 13)

INF/OF (left foot infection)
Expected return: June
Edwards was cleared for all baseball activity on May 13 in Jupiter, Fla., and will be evaluated for a game progression in the next few days. He has not appeared in a game since March 5. Miami transferred Edwards, who opened the season on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to March 25), to the 60-day IL on May 7. (Last updated: May 13)

RHP (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: 2025
Alcantara, who has been playing catch off and on, is continuing his rehab while with the team in Miami. He initially felt the discomfort on the 94th and final pitch of his Sept. 3 start against the Nationals and was diagnosed with a right forearm flexor strain. An MRI later revealed a right UCL sprain. He began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville on Sept. 21, but shut himself down after experiencing forearm tightness. (Last updated: May 10)

RHP (right UCL tear)
Expected return:
2025
Pérez, who opened the season on the injured list (retroactive to March 25), is rehabbing in Miami. Pérez had Tommy John surgery on April 8 after experiencing soreness in his bullpen session on April 2. He was transferred to the 60-day IL on April 4.

Pérez's recurring nail issue had forced him to exit for precautionary reasons after just 14 pitches on March 13 -- but the bigger issue came the following morning when he reported feeling soreness in his right elbow. (Last updated: May 10)

LHP (left elbow ulnar neuritis)
Expected return: Post-All-Star break
Simpson, who underwent surgery for left elbow ulnar neuritis on April 23, is rehabbing in Jupiter, Fla. He is expected back after the All-Star break. Simpson had tossed one inning for Single-A Jupiter on April 6 after previously completing one inning and 25 pitches in an extended spring game on April 2 before experiencing a setback.

Simpson, who opened the season on the injured list (retroactive to March 25), didn't pitch in a Grapefruit League game after his Feb. 27 outing because he began to feel discomfort. He was transferred to the 60-day IL on April 20. (Last updated: May 10)

Minor Leagues

OF (adductor strain)
Expected return: Soon
Head, who was acquired in the Luis Arraez trade, is considered day to day. He is rehabbing in Jupiter, Fla. Miami's fifth-ranked prospect has yet to make his organizational debut. (Last updated: May 10)
