Fernando Tatis Jr. joins another elite list

Notes on Urias, Hosmer, Margot, Naylor

August 7th, 2019

Bill Center, longtime sportswriter for U-T San Diego, is an employee of the Padres.

For Fernando Tatis Jr., it was just another night at the office.

But it wasn’t.

Not only did the rookie shortstop go from first to third on a wild pitch, he hit his 20th homer – a two-run shot that capped the Padres’ five-run fifth.

The homer was historic. He became only the 10th rookie shortstop in Major League history to reach the 20-homer plateau. The home run record for a rookie shortstop is 30 by Nomar Garciaparra in 1997.

Tatis also extended his hitting streak to a 10th straight game with Tuesday’s 0-for-4. He is hitting .302 (13-for-43) during the streak with four homers a double and seven RBIs. And he has had at least one hit in 16 of his last 17 games, going 23-for-74 (.311) with three doubles, six homers and 15 RBIs.

Tatis has also hit in seven straight interleague games, going 9-for-29 with four homers and six RBIs.

NOTEBOOK

• Rookie 2B Luis Urias is 6-for-17 with a homer in a five-game hitting streak that has raised his batting average to .138 from .063. Before the start of the streak, Urias was 1-for-24 since his July 20 promotion from Triple-A El Paso. Because he has drawn eight walks and has been hit by three pitches since his return, Urias has a .346 on-base percentage. He was 2-for-24 during his first stint with the Padres in April.

• 1B Eric Hosmer has hit homers in back-to-back games for the second time this season. He also has four homers in the past seven games – a stretch during which he has gone 8-for-25 with three walks, 13 RBIs and seven runs scored for a .320/.393/.800/1.193 slash line.

• CF Manuel Margot is 5-for-14 (.357) over his last five games with two doubles and two homers (including a pinch-hit homer) for a .929 slugging percentage and a 1.286 OPS.

• LF Josh Naylor is 4-for-14 with a double, a homer and three RBIs since his return from Triple-A on Aug. 1.
