Padres add Yacabonis, Almonte to pool
SAN DIEGO -- The Padres added three players to their 60-man player pool on Sunday, ensuring themselves some depth in light of recent injuries and transactions.
Righty reliever Jimmy Yacabonis and outfielder Abraham Almonte -- both non-roster invitees to Spring Training -- were added to the pool of players the Padres can use throughout the season. So, too, was left-hander Daniel Camarena, a Minor League signing who spent last year in the Yankees and Twins systems.
None of the three will push for a place on the Opening Day roster, but they could provide useful support this season. Almonte, for instance, is a switch-hitter who can play all three outfield positions -- much like Franchy Cordero, who was dealt to the Royals earlier this week.
Yacabonis, meanwhile, impressed during Spring Training, allowing two hits and an earned run while striking out six over 5 1/3 innings. But he was on the outside of a deep bullpen mix and left off the team's initial player pool.
Since then, however, the Padres have lost Trey Wingenter and José Castillo to injury. They added lefty Tim Hill in the Cordero trade, but Yacabonis offers even more reinforcements.
As for Camarena, he's set to serve as a starter at the team's alternate training site. Prospect Ronald Bolaños was also shipped to Kansas City in this week's trade, leaving the team short on starting options for its alternate site. In need of arms to help keep that group fresh, the Padres added Camarena, who has posted a 4.29 ERA across seven Minor League seasons.
The Padres’ player pool currently sits at 55, with five spots still available.
