Padres reinstate INF Logan Forsythe from 60-day DL and place INF Jedd Gyorko on 15-day DL

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced that they have reinstated infielder Logan Forsythe from the 60-day disabled list and have placed infielder Jedd Gyorko on the 15-day disabled list with a right groin strain. In addition, to clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the club has designated catcher John Baker for assignment. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcements.

Forsythe, 26, was originally placed on the 15-day disabled list prior to the start of the season with right plantar fasciitis and was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on April 24. The right-handed hitter appeared in eight games on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tucson, hitting .360 (9-for-25) with six runs, two doubles, three triples, two home runs, five RBI and eight walks, playing four of those eight games at shortstop, three at second base and one as the designated hitter. Over parts of two seasons with the Padres (2011-12), he has hit .254 (118-for-465) with 57 runs, 22 doubles, four triples, six home runs, 38 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 153 games played. 

Gyorko, 24, made his Major League debut for the Padres this season with a start on Opening Day, April 1, against the New York Mets at Citi Field. In 60 games so far for the Padres, he has hit .284 (66-for-232) with 36 runs, 17 doubles, eight home runs, 25 RBI and 20 walks. He has started 60 games for the Padres, including 51 at second base and nine at third base. The right-handed hitter currently leads all Major League rookies in average (.284), hits (66), runs (36) and total bases (107) while ranking tied for the lead in doubles (17) and second in home runs (eight) and RBI (25).

Baker, 32, played in 16 games for the Padres this season, hitting .150 (6-for-40) with two RBI. He was optioned to Triple-A Tucson on May 28 and has hit .231 (3-for-13) with two runs and an RBI in four games for the T-Pads. Behind the plate for San Diego this season he tossed out five of 13 attempted base stealers, or 38.5 percent. Over parts of six Major League seasons with the Florida Marlins (2008-11) and Padres (2012-13), Baker has hit .258 (231-for-894) with 115 runs scored, 50 doubles, one triple, 14 home runs, 105 RBI and 108 walks in 291 games played.
