White Sox acquire reliever Brazobán, Gold Glover Brenton Doyle

ST. PETERSBURG – Strong pitching and strong defense are always essential components for Major League Baseball playoff teams, a spot the 2026 White Sox currently find themselves residing in thanks to their three-game lead in the American League Central.

General manager Chris Getz made moves on Monday, with the 5 p.m. CT Trade Deadline approaching, to enhance both areas on his squad by trading for right-handed pitcher Huascar Brazobán from the Mets and outfielder Brenton Doyle from the Rockies.

In the deal for Brazobán, the White Sox sent Minor League right-handers Davis and Franklin to the Mets. In the Doyle trade, the White Sox gave up Minor League right-hander Adams, who was the team’s No. 8 prospect per MLB Pipeline, and 16-year-old Venezuelan infield prospect Vielma. To make room for Doyle on the 40-man, right-hander Duncan Davitt was designated for assignment.

Doyle, 28, started the 2026 season in a 4-for-31 funk for the Rockies and has dealt with a left oblique contusion and a left groin strain he suffered while on an injury rehab assignment at Triple-Albuquerque, keeping him out for Colorado from May 21 to July 30. But the right-handed hitter is a two-time Gold Glove winner with 79 stolen bases in 458 career games over four big-league seasons. He also launched 23 home runs and 24 doubles as recently as the ’24 season and was basically untouchable at the ’25 Trade Deadline.

All-Star Tristan Peters has become the White Sox regular center fielder, but the left-handed hitter is in a 6-for-56 slump since hitting for the cycle on July 10. The White Sox also have Everson Pereira, who drove in four runs during a 9-1 victory over the Rays on Sunday, and Randal Grichuk as outfielders hitting from the right side, not to mention Austin Hays, who is currently on the 60-day injured list.

Brazobán, 36, is 5-2 with a 2.56 ERA, 49 strikeouts, a .166 opponents' average and a 1.01 WHIP over 46 games (six starts) and 52 2/3 innings this season, his third with the Mets. He opened the season with a streak of 10 consecutive scoreless appearances, covering 10 2/3 innings, and has a 0.84 ERA over his last 10 outings. He doesn’t become a free agent until after the 2028 season, while Doyle, who avoided arbitration for the ’26 season by agreeing upon a $3.1 million deal, can become a free agent after the ’29 season.

Adams was on the White Sox radar to help this current team. But the White Sox have added controllable help to their postseason cause, starting with right-handed starter Luis Castillo on Sunday, without giving up any Top 100 prospects.
