PIRATES CHARITIES CARE-A-VAN

The 2017 Pirates Charities CARE-a-van, presented by Highmark, took place from Wednesday, December 6 through Friday, December 8, taking part in private community events leading up to the 2017 PiratesFest at PNC Park, presented by Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh.

The CARE-a-van hosted a total of 19 events impacting nine cities in the greater Pittsburgh area, including stops in Erie, Pa, Altoona, Pa - home of the Pirates Double-A affiliate the Altoona Curve; Morgantown, WV - home of the Pirates Single-A affiliate the West Virginia Black Bears; Youngstown, OH, Wheeling, WV and more.

Players and prospects taking part included Josh Bell, Christopher Bostick, Steven Brault, Tyler Glasnow, Clay Holmes, Nick Kingham, Chad Kuhl, Jack Leathersich, Max Moroff, Felipe Rivero, Edgar Santana, A.J. Schugel, Jacob Stallings and Jameson Taillon. Coaches Heberto Andrade, Kimera Bartee, Jeff Branson, Joey Cora, Jordan Comadena and Euclides Rojas also participated.

The CARE-a-van featured three separate groups of players and coaches traveling throughout the region. Pirates personnel and Pirates Charities, the philanthropic arm of the Pirates, partnered with local non-profits to assist with projects and services, as well as visit with schools and community organizations.

At each visit players, coaches and front office employees donated their time to help make a difference in each community.

  • 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. - Highmark Caring Place Family Christmas Party at Fun-Fore-All

Altoona, PA
  • 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. - James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center visit with the Altoona Curve.
  • 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. - Supply drop-off for St. Vincent DePaul Monastery Community Garden at Altoona Curve's PNG Field
Pittsburgh, PA
  • 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. - Holiday Party for Lending Hearts at Highmark SportsWorks at the Carnegie Science Center

  • 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. - Ronald McDonald House Charities of Morgantown to serve dinner and visit with patients and families in partnership with the West Virginia Black Bears
Thursday, December 7

  • 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. - Visit to Sunnyview Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center
  • 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. - Adopt-a-Family event in partnership with the Salvation Army

All three groups will take part in the "Pirates Charities Partner Celebration at PNC Park" to honor those donors, beneficiaries and supporters who join with Pirates Charities to support and assist the community throughout the year.
