Narron, Bjornson out as Red Sox coaches

October 12th, 2020

BOSTON -- While the search continues for the next manager of the Red Sox, the club does have some news on the shape of the 2021 coaching staff.

Bench coach Jerry Narron and bullpen coach Craig Bjornson did not have their contracts renewed for the 2021 season.

The remainder of the staff -- pitching coach Dave Bush, assistant pitching coach Kevin Walker, hitting coach Tim Hyers, assistant hitting coach Pete Fatse, third-base coach Carlos Febles, first-base coach Tom Goodwin, special assistant/catching coach Jason Varitek and coach Ramon Vazquez -- have all been invited to return to the staff in ’21.

While chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom has declined to say if Alex Cora will be considered as the next manager once his suspension is up after the World Series, all of the coaches who have been invited to return either worked with Cora in his two seasons as manager or were hired by him last offseason.

Cora and the Red Sox had what they called a “mutual parting of ways” in January due to findings by MLB in the Astros’ sign-stealing investigation. Cora, who was bench coach for the Astros in 2017, was named as a central figure in an operation in which the club illegally used technology to decode signs.

In April, Cora was cleared of any wrongdoing in MLB’s investigation into the 2018 Red Sox. At that time, MLB announced he was suspended through the end of this year’s World Series.

On the last day of the regular season, Bloom announced that Ron Roenicke would not return as manager in 2021.

Bloom also stated that he won’t be publicizing any candidates during the search for the team’s next manager.

Narron was brought by Roenicke as bench coach during Spring Training. This is the second time Narron had a one-year bench coach stint for Boston, having previously done so in 2003.

Bjornson was the bullpen coach for the Red Sox the last three seasons.
