The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:
•   Left-handed pitcher Chris Sale was activated from the 10-day disabled list. He will start today's game against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.
•   To make room for Sale on the 25-man roster, the Red Sox optioned right-handed pitcher Brandon Workman to Triple-A Pawtucket following last night's game.
•   Right-handed pitcher William Cuevas was returned to Pawtucket following last night's game against the Orioles, after the Red Sox were permitted to add him to the active roster as a 26th man for yesterday's doubleheader per Major League Baseball Rules.
President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.
Sale, 29, is 11-4 with a 2.04 ERA (32 ER/141.0 IP) in 22 starts this season. He entered today leading the majors in opponent batting average (.179), opponent OPS (.530), WHIP (0.87), and strikeouts per 9.0 innings (13.21), while leading the American league in ERA. The left-hander has not allowed a run in his last 23.0 innings pitched, the longest active scoreless streak in the majors. Sale is 5-0 with a 0.23 ERA (1 ER/39.0 IP) in his last six outings, having allowed zero runs in his last three starts. Acquired by Boston in December 2016, he has made 54 starts as a member of the Red Sox, going 28-12 with a 2.56 ERA (101 ER/355.1 IP) and 515 strikeouts.
Workman, 29, is 2-0 with a 2.59 ERA (7 ER/24.1 IP), a .233 opponent batting average, a 1.15 WHIP, 24 strikeouts, and seven walks over 26 relief appearances for Boston this season. The right-hander has also made 16 appearances for Pawtucket, posting a 4.03 ERA (13 ER/29.0 IP) with 32 strikeouts, five walks, and a .196 opponent batting average. After undergoing Tommy John surgery in June 2015, Workman returned to the majors in 2017, recording a 3.18 ERA (14 ER/39.2 IP) in 33 relief appearances and earning the Red Sox Comeback Player of the Year Award from the Boston Baseball Writers.
Cuevas, 27, threw a scoreless eighth inning in last night's 6-4 win over the Orioles, his second major league appearance of 2018. He is 8-6 with a 3.45 ERA (45 ER/117.1 IP) in 20 starts with the PawSox this season, striking out 102 hitters and walking 32. Originally signed by Boston as an international free agent in 2008, Cuevas made his major league debut with the Red Sox in 2016 before splitting the 2017 season between the Miami Marlins and Detroit Tigers organizations. The Venezuelan native returned to the Red Sox organization in December 2017, signing as a minor league free agent.
