Red Sox announce roster moves

  • Left-handed pitcher Franklin Morales was activated from the disabled list. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Pedro Beato was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket after last night's game.
  • Infielder Brandon Snyder was placed on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to August 8) with right elbow ulnar neuritis. To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, third baseman Will Middlebrooks was recalled from Pawtucket.


Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcements.


Morales, 27, had been on the 15-day disabled list since June 25 (retroactive to June 23) with a left pectoralis strain. He allowed just one hit with no walks and six strikeouts over 5.1 innings during a four-game rehab stint, including three games with Triple-A Pawtucket and one with Double-A Portland. The left-hander, who began the season on the 15-day disabled list with a low back strain, has made six appearances for the Red Sox in 2013, going 2-0 with a 7.30 ERA (10 ER/12.1 IP), nine walks, and 11 strikeouts.


Middlebrooks, 24, returns for his second major league stint of the year. The right-handed hitter was optioned to Pawtucket on June 25 and has totaled 44 games with the PawSox in 2013, including a five-game rehab stint while on the major league disabled list from June 4-9. With Pawtucket this season, he is batting .269 (47-for-175) with five doubles, 10 home runs, 34 RBI, 16 walks, and 25 runs scored. He has hit safely in his last eight games, hitting .333 (11-for-33) with a double, two homers, and five RBI in that time. Since the start of July, he leads the PawSox and ranks ninth in the International League with 23 RBI. In 53 games with Boston to begin the season, he went 39-for-203 (.192) with 13 doubles, nine home runs, 25 RBI, and 19 runs scored. 


The 26-year-old Beato has appeared in 10 games for the Red Sox, all in relief, over four major league stints this season. He is 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA (4 ER/10.0 IP) and five strikeouts for Boston this year. With Pawtucket, Beato owns a 5-3 record with three saves, a 2.09 ERA (10 ER/43.0 IP), 18 walks, and 35 strikeouts in 26 games out of the bullpen.


Since being recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on June 25, Snyder has appeared in 21 games for the Red Sox, including 10 starts, all at third base. The 26-year-old is 9-for-43 (.209) with three doubles, two home runs, and seven RBI for Boston. He began the season with Pawtucket, where he hit .267 (63-for-236) with 16 doubles, one triple, 10 home runs, 37 RBI, 36 runs, and 20 walks in 63 games prior to being recalled.
