Discounted early bird registration is now open for the 9th annual Run to Home Base 9K run / 5K run-walk charity race, presented by New Balance. Red Sox fans who dream of crossing homeplate at Fenway with a crowd cheering them on, can live out their dreams Saturday, July 28, 2018 as Boston's cherished ballpark transforms into a racing venue in support of Home Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital program.
Home Base is a philanthropic partnership between the official team charity of the Boston Red Sox and one of the nation's most renowned teaching hospitals. The program provides clinical evaluations and treatment to Veterans of all eras with invisible wounds such as post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury - two increasingly common and often debilitating wounds of the war on terror - as well as clinical and support services to their families.
"The services at Home Base have helped thousands of Veterans and Veteran family members over the past eight years, and that assistance would not be possible without the generous support and energy of the runners who help raise funds," said Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner. "But this event is so much more than just a run. It's an opportunity to educate people about the invisible wounds of war, and a chance to help remove the stigma that so many Veterans feel. We hope Veterans, civilians, and families will join us once again for this important Fenway Park event, and that they come away feeling inspired by the stories they hear and the work that is being accomplished by this special public-private partnership."
Retired Brigadier General Jack Hammond, Executive Director of Home Base, says the mission of the Run extends beyond the much-needed fundraising. "There are a lot of service men and women who are struggling with their injuries who need to know there is a team behind them when they get home," Hammond said. "The Run to Home Base is a way to not only say thanks, but step up to the plate to serve those who have served all of us. As a community, we are all strengthened when we share both the benefits and the burdens required in serving our nation."
To register for the 2018 Run to Home Base presented by New Balance on July 28th, visit www.runtohomebase.org. The special early-bird fundraising minimum is $550. Beginning on January 16th , the fundraising minimum increases to $800.
