FORT MYERS, Fla. -- As the Red Sox were finishing out their Spring Training workout on Tuesday, the news started to circulate that Manny Machado had reached agreement on a 10-year, $300 million contract with the Padres.
Though the star slugger will be far from Boston, his new contract could have a ripple effect on some Red Sox players.

Shortstop Xander Bogaerts is eligible for free agency after this season. Right fielder Mookie Betts would first be eligible following the 2020 campaign.
"Oh wow," said Bogaerts. "That's a lot [of money]. Good for him, man. He's stood out long and I'm assuming he got what he wanted, obviously if he ended up signing it.
"I mean, I don't see how it's bad for any other one. Any other player. I think that helps everyone. Good for him, man. He stood out long. He was one of the main guys that stood out and I'm assuming that he got the deal he wanted."

Betts didn't think it was the appropriate time to tie Machado's new deal into his potential worth.
"I mean, I think we're different players, so obviously it's going to be a different time," said Betts. "I don't want to speak on anybody else's free agency. I've just got to worry about my own."
At times this offseason, Machado had been linked to the Yankees, so at least the Red Sox won't have to face him very often in San Diego.
"Good for the kid, man. Good for the kid. Good for baseball," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. "I know he had some issues with the organization a couple of years ago or whatever. I actually know him, and he's what, 26? I guess he got what he wanted, you know, and I think that's good for the game."
Porcello works with Lowe
Former Red Sox sinkerballer Derek Lowe was back in camp on Tuesday watching Rick Porcello's side session.
The two have developed a close rapport the past couple of years, and Lowe lives roughly five minutes from Boston's Spring Training complex.
"I'm all for it," said Cora.
It turns out Lowe witnessed Porcello at his best.
"From what [pitching coach] Dana [LeVangie] said, that was his best bullpen since Rick's been here," Cora said. "Location. Delivery. Action on the pitches. He was very satisfied with the way he threw the ball."
Brasier sent home with toe infection
Red Sox reliever Ryan Brasier had to fly back to Boston on Tuesday due to an infection on the pinkie toe of his right foot.
"So it's just to make sure there's nothing serious about it. He'll go up there, somebody will check it out. Hopefully he'll be back soon and get back to work," said Cora.
