Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today made the following roster moves:

  • Right-handed pitcher Wikelman Gonzalez was selected to the Major League roster from Double-A Portland.
  • Right-handed pitcher Luis Perales was selected to the Major League roster from High-A Greenville.

Boston’s 40-man roster is now at 39.

Gonzalez, 21, is ranked among the Red Sox’ top 10 prospects by Baseball America (No. 8) and MLB.com (No. 9), as well as Boston’s top pitching prospect by MLB.com. The right-hander split 2023 between Greenville (15 starts) and Portland (10 starts), going 9-4 with a 3.96 ERA (49 ER/111.1 IP) while leading all minor league pitchers (min. 100.0 IP) with 13.58 strikeouts per 9.0 innings (168 SO). In his first Double-A experience, he went 3-1 with a 2.42 ERA (14 ER/48.1 IP), .162 opponent batting average (27-for-167), and 63 strikeouts. The Venezuela native was signed by Boston as an international free agent in July 2018 by Wilder Lobo and Rolando Pino.

Perales, 20, is ranked among the Red Sox’ top 10 prospects by Baseball America (No. 7) and MLB.com (No. 10). Baseball America ranks him as Boston’s top pitching prospect and rates his fastball as the best in the organization. The right-hander split 2023 between Single-A Salem (13 starts) and Greenville (eight starts), going 4-7 with a 3.91 ERA (39 ER/89.2 IP) and 115 strikeouts. The Venezuela native was signed by the Red Sox as an international free agent in July 2019 by Lenin Rodriguez and Rolando Pino.
